Software Conflict 2.0 Available for Order
I've had a lot of fun over the past several days tracking the progress of online retail availability for the first developer.* book, Software Conflict 2.0: The Art and Science of Software Engineering, by computing pioneer Robert L. Glass. A few weeks ago we sent the "metadata" for our title to Ingram, our distributor/wholesaler in the book trade. This data includes things like the title, ISBN, author, price, availability date, cover image, etc. Ingram sends this information on our behalf to the "Books In Print" agencies in the US and UK, and from there this data makes its way electronically around the world and the web.
This past week Software Conflict 2.0 showed up on Amazon US, Amazon UK, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Powell's, and a bunch of other places. Some independent booksellers on sites like Alibris, Half.com, and Amazon Marketplace are selling the book also, often at a markup over the cover price! As you can imagine, we're pretty excited about all this. It's funny, the book became more "real" for me when I saw it for sale in the major online bookstores than when I was holding the first copy from the printer in my hand. (It's a beautiful book, by the way, thanks to the hard work of our book designer Giles Hoover at ospreyDesign.)
If you've been thinking about or planning to purchase a copy of our book, now's a great time to do it. We really want to build up our sales rank on Amazon US and Amazon UK as much as possible as quickly as possible. Pre-orders are a great way to do that. If you prefer to purchase elsewhere, that's great too. You can also walk into any brick-and-mortar bookstore in the US or UK and order a copy (ISBN 0977213307). At the time of this writing, we're less than two weeks away from the book's official release, so your wait won't be long. We really appreciate your support.
Update: I just uploaded a whole set of new pages about the book (see the right side menu on that page), including the Table of Contents, credits, ordering information, and the whole story behind the book.
Best,
Dan
Software Conflict 2.0 Indian Edition - We Hope So
Hi Proto,
I do of course remember the very helpful information you sent me about Indian editions, the Indian book market, and the book buying habits of working programmers and students in and around India. Thanks for asking about and Indian/subcontinent edition of Software Conflict 2.0.
We definitely hope to do an Indian edition, or find a way to make the book obtainable in India (and any other place in the world we can too). We're just not sure yet how we're going to make it happen. One thing we're working on is the eBook edition, which hopefully will be within reach price-wise for people where buying the physical book is either impossible or impractical. Do you know whether your friends and colleagues are buying or reading software development eBooks?
In order to do a print edition in India, we're going to need to form a partnership with an established publishing company and distributor in India. We're working on that, and would happily accept any assistance.
Thanks again,
Dan

Hey Dan, any plans for an Indian edition? :)
Hello Dan,
Proto here, writing from India. First of all congrats. Great to know that you are on the cusp of releasing the first Developer.* Book. I hope that this is just the beginning of what should turn out to be a series of great books on Software, Design and the Craft.
I just wanted to know whether you are having any plans to come out with an Indian edition (known also as Sub Continental edition) any time soon? I hope you remember the mail exchange we had around an year ago about the Indian book publishing market. Thanks.
Regards,
Proto.
