Foreword by Tom DeMarco - Software Creativity 2.0 Update
Things have been quiet on the developer.* web site lately, in large part because our efforts have been focused on the final stages of the publication of Software Creativity 2.0, by Robert L. Glass (ISBN 0977213315). Check out the final cover, shown to the left (click on the image to see a larger version). The main thing that's new is that we've added Tom DeMarco's name as the author of a Foreword. We're excited and honored that Mr. DeMarco agreed to participate. You may be familiar with Tom DeMarco as the author of acclaimed books such as Peopleware (co-authored with Timothy Lister), Walting With Bears (also with Timothy Lister), The Deadline: A Novel About Project Management, and Slack: Getting Past Burnout, Busywork, and the Myth of Total Efficiency. If you haven't read his work, I recommend it highly--and soon enough you'll be able see what Mr. DeMarco says about Software Creativity 2.0!
As I write this, I'm expecting our first proof back from the printer, and the proofreader and indexer are hard at work on those final-stage tasks. The book has come in at a hefty 472 pages. I've read it several times now, and each read reinforces the good feeling about the decision to publish this great book. The cover price will be $34.99 in the US, and £20.99 in the UK. We'll hopefully be making arrangements with publishers in many other countries to print local editions, but that may take some time. If you're outside the practical shipping/price range of the US and UK, please stay tuned for announcements about an eBook version that will be available.
Unfortunately, I think because of a mistake I made in the way I submitted the information, Amazon and other online booksellers have not yet picked up the book. As soon as they do, I'll post an announcement and update this space for people who would like pre-order. Our aim is to have the book shipping to readers by Thanksgiving. We'll be selling copies direct from the web site, as well, including a special price for both Software Conflict 2.0 and Software Creativity 2.0 purchased together.
Contest Update
We're still on the lookout for entries to our Software Creativity 2.0 contest (follow that link to read our first entry from Ben in San Francisco). It was not unexpected that we might have a hard time finding readers of the original edition, since we knew in advance that copies are scarce. So if we don't get a couple more entries soon, we may have to find another way to give away the signed editions. :-) But Ben from San Francisco's entry stands by itself pretty well. Here's an excerpt:
"Since initially reading Software Creativity I've often wondered how it could possibly have gone out of print (as many of my coworkers can attest - they've all heard my rant on it's genius) and when, and if, it would ever come back. I'm so incredibly excited that it is being reprinted that I'm going to buy a few copies so that I can circulate them amongst my friends and give them the same incredible experience that I had the first, and still only, time I read this amazing book!"
Thanks, Ben!
And thank *you* for reading,
Dan
